Had
a call, regarding a desktop computer which cannot power up. So i hurried to her
office, as there was a dateline she had to keep, that morning. First thing I did
is to press the ON button and to see if, there is any malfunction (problematic
one will not spring back).
Next
i checked for loose or unplug power cable as the LCD screen too has no power.
Nope, nothing is loose. I went to the wall socket and found the extension cord
point, not plug in to the wall socket. After plugging in pc was able to start as
normal and later on she told me the cleaner guy had use the point for the vacuum
and forgot to connect back.
So,
a lesson learn. Never rush and always ask logical questions no matter how
silly it may seem, it will save a lot of time and hassle.
Then
there are times when power is good, monitor is on and pc not able to power up. We
now have to check the pc power cord. Try to see if there is any spare power
cord from another pc, monitor or get the power cord from an electric kettle.
*NOTE
– if your computer is under warranty do not open up the pc or do as below. Send
it back for warranty. If you have important files/documents, please request
them to backup for you. Opening up the pc may void warranty.
If
it’s still not working, then next action is to look at the PSU (power supply
unit). At this time, if you are not comfortable handling this yourself, then
time to get a technician (can request to bring a PSU over to test). The PSU is
where the power cord is plug into. If you smell burnt wiring next to the
exhaust fan, time to change the PSU.
Well
if the PSU is good, the next will be the main board. Make sure you are
disconnected from the power source before doing this, safety first!
2
cables are plug from the PSU to the main board. First piece is a socket with 4
pin and the longer one with 24 pin. Make sure to push them down properly as one
side of it has an edge where it will clip on to stay in place.
Power
up and still get no respond? Then time to get a replacement main board.
